The Wailin' Jennys
The darlings of the North American roots music arena.
Tickets: $22.5 • On sale: 1/30/2010 in the pub.
"One Voice," a live staple and highlight of the Jennys' Juno- winning debut album (the Canadian Grammy) 40 Days, remains a metaphoric statement of intent that to this day underlines the group's original mandate: three individuals with unique gifts combining seamlessly into a single beatific entity. Soprano Ruth Moody (guitar, banjo, accordion, bodhran), mezzo Nicky Mehta (guitar, harmonica, ukulele, percussion) and their newest member, vocalist Heather Masse combine to put out earthy rhythms infused with heavenly, pristine vocals in a mixture of folksy optimism and country twain. They are not only masters of their craft, but are vibrant and empowered Woman of Substance. As one reviewer states when listening to their CD, “Very simply put, this is one of the most vocally beautiful discs since CSN&Y were at their peak. This is going to be categorized as “folk music” and thusly will not get the wide spread recognition it deserves. These women were born to sing together. Individually, they have very, very good voices but when they put them together something really special happens.” As regular guests on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, these Canadian singer/songwriters have strummed their own groove in the folk rock genre. “Perhaps more beautiful than ever, The Wailin’ Jennys are the darlings of the North American roots music arena.” The Toronto Star. Join us for an evening of grace and beauty. It's the type of show The Big Room was made for.

Eric Bibb
Acoustic blues at it's best.
Tickets: $20 • On sale: 2/13/2010 in the pub.
A performance by Eric Bibb is an enriching experience – both musically and spiritually. Purveying a beautifully realised and deftly accomplished, soulful and gospel infused, folk- blues, Eric has no problem melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle contemporary sensibility. As one critic wrote “ Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genres to become a New World Blues”. "Eric is one of the new, young singers that has appeared on the scene that, much to my delight, has a great voice, is an excellent performer and has a great knowledge about the roots of this music." Taj Mahal. Eric's talent for both performing and songwriting has been recognized with a Grammy Nomination (for Shakin' a Tailfeather) and 4 W.C.Handy nominations (for the albums Spirit and the Blues, Home To Me and A Ship Called Love; for 'Kokomo' as Best Acoustic Blues Song of the Year, and for Best Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year). His songs have featured on TV shows such as BBC TV's 'Eastenders' and ‘Casualty’, and 'The District' in the USA. Eric's version of "I Heard the Angels Singin'" was included in the feature film "The Burial Society." Eric Bibb is the rare bluesman whose music effortlessly spans Saturday-night revelry and Sunday- morning devotion. When he takes the stage, the sacred and profane intertwine as he taps into African-American music's enduring power to overcome hard times and sustain the soul. Joining Eric will be Grant Dermody on harmonica. Grant is one of the countries best in acoustic blues and old-time music. His tone and technique are literally breathtaking. To quote a review from the 2009 Monterey Blues Festival, "I was more impressed with Eric and Grant than all the other great musician who played the festival." Nuf said.
This an acoustic show for the whole family. Join us.
