Sara Watkins Trio w/special guest Ma Muse
An evening of wonderful acoustic music with Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek.
Tickets: $15 • On sale: 6/13/2009 in the pub.
Sara Watkins, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter and fiddle player spent nearly two decades—all of her teenage and young adult life—as one-third of Nickel Creek, the Grammy Award–winning acoustic trio that used contemporary bluegrass as a starting point for its no-genre-barred sound. Along the way, she’s hinted at her desire to do a project of her own and even organized some exploratory sessions in Los Angeles about six years ago. Now, with Nickel Creek on indefinite hiatus, she is releasing her self-titled solo disc, recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville and produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. It features an impressively wide range of backing players and old friends, including itinerant alt-country duo Gillian Welch and Dave Rawling, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas; fellow travelers from the bluegrass world like Tim O’Brien, Chris Eldridge, Ronnie McCoury and Rayna Gellert; and her Nickel Creek bandmates. To attract such a group of musical giants demonstrates the level of respect her peers have for her musical talents.
Watkins’ has an air of easygoing virtuosity. She displays her skill as a multi-instrumentalist, playing the guitar and ukulele as well as the fiddle, and proves herself to be just as versatile, and breathtakingly mature, as a vocalist. Watkins segues gracefully from the lighthearted country and western swing of Jimmie Rodger’s “Any Old Time,” to the world-weariness and spiritual yearning of Norman Blake’s “Lord Won’t You Help Me,” to the romantic wistfulness of Jon Brion’s “Same Mistake.” Her trio is going to grace the Big Room stage for a special evening of beautiful acoustic music.
Joining Sara that evening will be Chico’s own Ma Muse. Featuring Sara Nutting and Karisha Longaker, Ma Muse is on the verge of exploding nationally. With their hauntingly rich a capella vocal presence, these alto-sopranos offer a musical journey filled with the sounds of upright bass, mandolin, hazuki, guitar, flute and last but not least, a unicycle. Sara and Karisha have earned the right to perform on the Big Room stage and I’m proud to present them. Get your tickets early so you can say you were there.

Cross Canadian Ragweed
Red dirt, kick-ass country music.
Tickets: $20 • On sale: 6/27/2009 in the pub.
Red dirt Southern rock comes to the Big Room. Think bad-ass country. Picture early Waylon Jennings with Phish-style jamming. Think LOUD. Full dance floor. Visualize the front row filling up early and stay’n full all night long. Plan a full day to recover. Cross Canadian Ragweed comes to Chico to show us just how hard country can rock. Remember the fun we’ve had with Texas/Oklahoma bands in the past? Well, here we go again.

JJ Grey & Mofro
Dance music ranging from gritty funk to raw Southern soul to blistering rock.
Tickets: $20 • On sale: 7/25/2009 in the pub.
From raw funk to deep soul, blues and rock, JJ and his band Mofro deliver devastating live performances. With long-time friend and guitarist Daryl Hance, bassist/organist Adam Scone, drummer Anthony Cole, and the Hercules Horns of saxophonist Art Edmaiston and trumpeter Dennis Marion, Grey moves effortlessly from gospel-tent fervor to Southern-fried rockers to deeply emotional soul all fueled by JJ’s gritty, smoldering vocals and intense, funk-infused guitar and keyboard work.
JJ Grey’s songs blend front porch realism with the best musical and literary traditions of the South. Like his songs, Grey’s rich, soulful vocals are forceful and commanding, seemingly wise and experienced beyond his years. As a performer, Grey is influenced by the sexually charged blues of Howlin' Wolf, the country soul of George Jones and the hard funk of James Brown. If you like Muddy Waters, Stevie Wonder, Tony Joe White, Jerry Reed, Otis Redding, Dr. John, Sly & The Family Stone or Van Morrison, you don't want to miss this show. JJ headlines scores of festivals across the United States and Europe. Highlights included The Voodoo Music Experience, SXSW, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest, The Austin City Limits Festival and a Southeast run with the Allman Brothers. From gritty funk and juke joint romps to contemplative country soul and blistering rockers, Grey’s music is in a class by itself, at once contemporary and classic. The Big Room is proud to present a national headliner for an evening of Southern fries soul. This is his only Nor Cal performance. Join us as, once again, with your help, we'll raise the roof of the Big Room.
