Darrell Scott
Singer/songwriter/Master Musician

Tickets: $20 • On sale: 7/24/2010 in the pub.

Darrell Scott is an official “favorite son” of the Big Room. His two previous appearances have sold out and rightly so. “His playing is unreal. He’s just limitless in his approach and knowledge of instruments.” Sam Bush. "Darrell Scott's music is equal parts talent and heart, soul and grace, power and poetry, charm and wit, funk and grit... all in service of the better parts of humanity. Darrell Scott is scary good. Listen and learn. I'm a huge fan." Rodney Crowell. "He is so good. He is soooo good." Alison Krauss. Oh well, maybe one more.... “Darrell Scott is to Nashville what Richard Thompson is to Britain and what Paul Brady is to Ireland." Boston Globe. What makes this visit a “can’t miss” is that he is performing this evening as a solo. It is this presentation that should highlight the true gifts of one of America’s greatest singer/songwriters/musicians. Darrell currently is touring as a hand-picked member of Robert Plant and the Band of Joy. Join us for the kind of evening the Big Room was made for.

JJ Grey & Mofro
Gritty funk to raw Southern soul to blistering rock.

Tickets: $20 • On sale: 8/14/2010 in the pub.

From raw funk to deep soul, blues and rock, JJ and his band Mofro deliver devastating live performances. With long-time friend and guitarist Daryl Hance, bassist/organist Adam Scone, drummer Anthony Cole, and the Hercules Horns of saxophonist Art Edmaiston and trumpeter Dennis Marion, Grey moves effortlessly from gospel-tent fervor to Southern-fried rockers to deeply emotional soul all fueled by JJ’s gritty, smoldering vocals and intense, funk-infused guitar and keyboard work. As a performer, Grey is influenced by the sexually charged blues of Howlin' Wolf, the country soul of George Jones and the hard funk of James Brown. If you like Muddy Waters, Stevie Wonder, Tony Joe White, Jerry Reed, Otis Redding, Dr. John, Sly & The Family Stone or Van Morrison, you don't want to miss this show. JJ headlines scores of festivals across the United States and Europe. From gritty funk and juke joint romps to contemplative country soul and blistering rockers, Grey’s music is at once contemporary and classic. This is his second appearance in the Big Room. His first sold out show had them dancing in the aisles (and on the dance floor)..

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave.
Perhaps the nation's top festival attraction of 2010.

Tickets: $20 • On sale: 8/21/2010 in the pub.

I am pleased to present perhaps the nation’s top festival attraction of 2010. Trombone Shorty quite simply is a true force of nature. After checking out a Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue performance, New York Times lead music critic Jon Pareles observed that the front man “flaunted the presence of a rock star... He played trombone with almost combative postures.” And Rolling Stone’s David Fricke observed that Andrews, “looking like a street-parade P. Diddy in a sharp white suit, made true heavy metal with his horn in a thrilling recasting of AC/DCs ‘Back in Black.’” Troy’s rarefied talents and immense promise inspired the organizers of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival to pick him as the subject of the fest’s annual Congo Square official poster. In 2009, at 23, he became the youngest artist ever to be pictured on a poster—the next youngest was Wynton Marsalis, who was featured at age 41. Said Marsalis of Andrews, “Shorty possesses the rarest combination of talent, technical capability and down-home soul. I’m his biggest fan.” After Trombone Shorty toured with Lenny Kravitz, Lenny lauded him as “a genius player. He’s got nothing but personality, he plays his ass off and he’s a beautiful human being.” This could be the show of the Summer. (At least until the next one.) Get your tickets early.

Carolina Chocolate Drops
“Dirt-floor-dance electricity." Rolling Stone Magazine

Tickets: $25 • On sale: 9/4/2010 in the pub.

I’m proud to present the Carolina Chocolate Drops in their only appearance (besides the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Fstival) west of St. Louis for the rest of 2010. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are the newest and youngest players in a long lineage of Black String Bands. The tradition traces its roots to musicians from Africa who came to the Americas in the holds of slave ships. Carolina Chocolate Drops formed after all three members — Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons and Justin Robinson — attended the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, N.C. The annual event brings together folk musicians, student musicians and African-American folk-music enthusiasts at Appalachian State University for a weekend of music and classes. After attending the festival, Giddens, Flemons and Robinson decided to sit in on a weekly jam session with Joe Thompson, an 86-year-old country fiddler well known for his distinctive style. Thompson inspired Giddens, Flemons and Robinson to create Carolina Chocolate Drops, a band which combines traditional string-band elements with several modern twists. Two of the three members of Carolina Chocolate Drops are classically trained: Rhiannon Giddens studied opera at the Oberlin Conservatory and Justin Robinson studied classical violin. Dom Flemons studied guitar and slam poetry. In 2008, they received an invitation to play on the Grand Ole Opry. “The Drops were the first black string band to play the Opry,” Duffy notes. “The Opry has a huge black following but you don’t see that on stage.” Opry host, Marty Stewart, pronounced the performance a healing moment for the Opry. Rolling Stone Magazine described the Carolina Chocolate Drops’ style as “dirt-floor-dance electricity." This trio has been taking the festival circuit by storm and I encourage you to bring the whole family. This is quite possibly one of the most original and inspiring groups I’ve ever presented. Visit the link below to get a taste of what you can expect from an evening in the Big Room with the Carolina Chocolate Drops!
